Basic Graphic Design

 Basic Graphic Design
Task 1

What is Graphic Design?
  • Graphic Design work with draw, painted, photographed, or computer-generated image (picture).
  • They also design the letterforms that make up various typefaces found in movie credits and TV, in books, magazines and menus, even on computer screens.
  • Graphic Design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas.

What is logo?
  • logo is a symbol, sign, or emblem. Human beings have used such symbols throughout time to convey a succinct message. In present times, logos tend to be graphical in nature, designed for easy recognition of an organization. It is a tool to build an identity for the organization, as part of its trademark or brand, and to generate favorable thoughts and feelings about the organization.

What is icon & symbol?

Icon
  •  In a computer's graphical user interface ( GUI ), an icon (pronounced EYE-kahn ) is an image that represents an application, a capability, or some other concept or specific entity with meaning for the user. An icon is usually selectable but can also be a no selectable image such as a company's logo.
  • On a Web page, an icon is often a graphical image that represents the topic or information category of another Web page. Frequently, the icon is a hypertext link to that page. Typically, icons are gathered in one or two places on a page, either as separate graphic files or as a single image map.

SYMBOL

  • Mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process, e.g. the letter or letters standing for a chemical element or a character in musical notation.

What is websites?

  • Each website has its own unique web address which can be reached through an internet connection.
  • The opening page of website is usually called homepage which contains hyperlinks to other pages on the same or other site.

What is advertising?

  • ADVERTISING is mass media content intended to persuade audiences of readers, viewers or listeners to take action on products, services and ideas.
  • The idea is to drive consumer behavior in a particular way in regard to a product, service concept.

What is book design?

  • Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole.

What is brochures?
  • A small book or magazine containing pictures and information about a product or service

What is billboards?
  • Definition: Billboards take two forms. The most common definition of a billboard is an outdoor sign or poster you usually see on freeways, highways and streets. A billboard is also an announcement of a sponsor or sponsors at the beginning, middle or end of a radio or television broadcast.

What is product packaging?

Definition: The wrapping material around a consumer item that serves to contain, identify, describe, protect, display, promote and otherwise make the product marketable and keep it clean

  • Packaging is more than just your product's pretty face. Your package design may affect everything from breakage rates in shipment to whether stores will be willing to stock it. For example, "displayability" is an important concern. The original slanted-roof metal container used for Log Cabin Syrup was changed to a design that was easier to stack after grocers became reluctant to devote the necessary amounts of shelf space to the awkward packages. Other distribution-related packaging considerations include:

  • Labeling. You may be required to include certain information on the label of your product when it is distributed in specific ways. For example, labels of food products sold in retail outlets must contain information about their ingredients and nutritional value.

  • Opening. If your product is one that will be distributed in such a way that customers will want to--and should be able to--sample or examine it before buying, your packaging will have to be easy to open and to reclose. If, on the other hand, your product should not be opened by anyone other than the purchaser--an over-the-counter medication, for instance--then the packaging will have to be designed to resist and reveal tampering.

  • Size. If your product must be shipped a long distance to its distribution point, then bulky or heavy packaging may add too much to transportation costs.

  • Durability. Many products endure rough handling between their production point and their ultimate consumer. If your distribution system can't be relied upon to protect your product, your packaging will have to do the job.

What is poster?
  • A poster is a “public” piece of paper conveying information through text (words) and/or graphic images (symbols or pictures). It’s usually designed to be displayed vertically on a wall or window and is large enough to be seen and read from a relatively short distance. Its main target audience is the person walking by. A poster must convey its message with immediacy and purpose, because people on the street are often in a hurry.
  • Posters are sometimes huge and can be seen from a long distance and may appear along highways (on bill boards) or on the sides of buildings. Posters may also appear in much smaller versions, sometimes like a postcard, and are called handbills. Whatever the size or shape, posters have a job to do and that is to convey information.

What is greeting cards?

  • A folded card bearing a message of greeting, congratulation, or other sentiment, usually sent or given on a special occasion or holiday.

What is branding?

  • The process  involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers.

What is illustrator?
  • Illustration is a unique art and Illustrators create images for a variety of outlets that include children’s books, advertising campaigns, clothing, packaging and store displays, video games, movies, animations, and comic books. Illustrators are art directors, graphic, package and web designers, computer game developers, character designers, digital artists, animators, exhibit designers, and storyboard, concept and studio artists.

What is animation?
  • A simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or frames. Cartoons on television is one example of animation. Animation on computers is one of the chief ingredients of multimedia presentations. There are many software applications that enable you to create animations that you can display on a computer monitor.
  • Note the difference between animation and video. Whereas video takes continuous motion and breaks it up into discrete frames, animation starts with independent pictures and puts them together to form the illusion of continuous motion.

Task 2

THE ELEMENT OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

The elements of graphic design are used, and often combined, to create graphic works. They should not be confused with principles of design, such as balance and white space, but rather components such as color, type and images. Presented here is a list of the most commonly used elements in graphic design.

Lines
  • Lines are used to divide space, direct the eye, and create forms. At the most basic level, straight lines are found in layouts to separate content, such as in magazine, newspaper, and website designs. This can of course go much further, with curved, dotted, and zigzag lines used as the defining elements on a page and as the basis for illustrations and graphics. Often, lines will be implied, meaning other elements of design will follow the path of line, such as type on a curve.

  • The gird system
  • Creating wireframes

Color
  • Color is an interesting element of graphic design because it can be applied to any other element, changing it dramatically. It can be used to make an image stand out, to show linked text on a website, and to evoke emotion. Graphic designers should combine their experience with color with an understanding of color theory.

  • Color models: (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & K-black)
  • Color models: ( Red, Green & Blue)
  • Using color swatch books
  • Color separation
  • The properties of color

Type
  • Type, of course, is all around us. In graphic design, the goal is to not to just place some text on a page, but rather to understand and use it effectively for communication. Choice of fonts (typefaces), size, alignment, color, and spacing all come into play. Type can be taken further by using it to create shapes and images.

  • Type families
  • Typography terminology
  • Letter Anatomy
  • Top front picks

Art, illustration & photography

  • A powerful image can make or break a design. Photographs, illustrations and artwork are used to tell stories, support ideas, and grab the audience's attention, so the selection is important. Graphic designers can create this work on their own, commission an artist or photographer, or purchase it at all price levels on many websites.

  • stock photo
  • Shutter stock
  • veer

Texture
  • Texture can refer to the actual surface of a design or to the visual appearance of a design. In the first case, the audience can actually feel the texture, making it unique from the other elements of design. Selection of paper and materials in package design can affect actual texture. In the second case, texture is implied through the style of design. Rich, layered graphics can create visual texture that mirrors actual texture.

Catrin Welz Stein

My Photo

  • In 2009 Catrin started to create digital images by collaging old illustrations and photographs. At the same time she discovered online social networks and her private images were then open to the public. The positive responses Catrin got there were her motivation to go on with her art until now.

  • Graphic designer and mother of two, Catrin Welz-Stein lives and works in Malaysia where she creates stunningly surreal works. Focused on mixed media, she breathes new life into vintage photos by experimenting in Photoshop, taking pictures apart and assembling them into new content. As she told ImageKind, "A large part of my work is the search for license-free images, illustrations or photos, for which copyright has long expired. Old books, magazines and the Internet are my primary resources for that. Once I have found the fitting image, I break it into pieces and then weave it back together mixed with other images. I transform, assemble and retouch the pieces, until the original image is no longer recognizable and an entirely new image is created."Her beautiful works are inspired by surrealism, fairy tales and folklore.

Tang Chiew Ling
  • Taking inspiration direct from her garden talented graphic designer, she uses leaves to create imaginative fashion figures and she also 24-year-old from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, says that the key to her work is making 'simple and fun' art that she can conjour up out of everyday objects.
